FIRE ON BARRINGTON STREET.
= About 1230 yesterday, an alarm was sounded from box 18, caused by flames being discovered in the upper portion of a large double building, owned by the estate ot the late Joseph A, Clark, on Lockman street. The southern half was occupiad by Messrs. Lambert Bros., furniture dealers, as storerooms, and it was
in the top story of it that the fire originated.
The northern portion was occupied by Meers.
Sunth & Kaye, pottery deslars: The firemen were on hand with their usual alacrity, and good had water playing on the burning mass ineide. The flames were confined entirely to the floor in which they originated, but it was hard to be got at owing to the dense quantity of smoke issuing from burning mattresses etc. Inside of an hour, however, all out was sounded, and the water was tured off. The southern portion of the building was all rutted and literally swamped with water.
Quite a quantity of the furniture was completely destroyed, though a large portion was saved through the exer-
tions of the Protection Company and fremen, who all worked with their aceustomed energy. Messrs. Smith & Kaye's atock
was not very
much damaged.
Lambert Brog. were insured in the Queen for $4,000, one half of which was re-insured;
Smith & Kaye in the Acadia for $2.000, and the building in the Halifax for 84,100;
