FIRE ON BARRINGTON STREET.

= About 1230 yesterday, an alarm was sounded from box 18, caused by flames being discovered in the upper portion of a large double building, owned by the estate ot the late Joseph A, Clark, on Lockman street. The southern half was occupied by Messrs. Lambert Bros., furniture dealers,  as storerooms, and it was in the top story of it that the fire originated. The northern portion was occupied by Messrs. Smith & Kaye, pottery dealars. The firemen were on hand with their usual alacrity, and soon had water playing on the burning mass inside. The flames were confined entirely to the floor in which they originated, but it was hard to get at owing to the dense quantity of smoke issuing from burning mattresses etc. Inside of an hour, however, all out was sounded, and the water was turned off. The southern portion of the building was all gutted and literally swamped with water.

Quite a quantity of the furniture was completely destroyed, though a large portion was saved through the exertions of the Protection Company and firemen, who all worked with their accustomed energy. Messrs. Smith & Kaye's stock was not very much damaged.

Lambert Bros. were insured in the Queen for $4,000, one half of which was re-insured;

Smith & Kaye in the Acadia for $2.000, and the building in the Halifax for 84,100.
