The Union Engine Company

The Union Engine Company was a period where the business of putting out fires became industrialized and was done by independent fire companies operating equipment owned by the Township of Halifax and later the City of Halifax. It started with nine men appointed by the Legislature and flourished into hundred of men spread across a multitude of fire companies. This period saw the birth of the first fire station, as opposed to the usual engine house; instead of buildings housing equipment only, structures were built to factor in human resources.
